Lucky seven for Perfect Day in NGC Derby
It could be lucky seven for Oaks winner, Perfect Day on Republic Day—September 24, when the 14 runners will go to post in the 83rd running of the 2,000-metre Grade One, NGC CNG Trinidad Derby Stakes, the final leg of local racing’s Triple Crown.
The first two legs of the Triple Crown were won impressively by the John O’Brien trained/Anthony Wight owned War of Words.
Yesterday, afternnon at the media conference for National Gas Company Day At The Races, owner Baskaran Bassawh pulled the number seven for his filly Perfect Day, before pulling position three for the raging favourite Bigman In Town at Jaffa Restaurant at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Wight selected post position six for his star War of Words, which will be ridden by Wilmer Galviz.
However, Prince Zeshan will race from the inside post as owner Nizam Mohammed pulled that spot for his Jamaican bred thoroughbred. The Roma Sagan-Maraj-owned colt, Pot Of Gold, one of O’Brien’s quintet will race next door from stall two. Barbadian leading three-year-old filly Nekitta will race from stall four for the $500,000 purse.
Owner Ruthven Smith pulled stall position 12 for Headline News with big race rider Nobel Abrego having the reins.
The Kidz Too owned Chase the Dragon will race from pole position 13, while the Harold Chadee trained Plum Plum will race from stall 14.
Master of Ceremonies, Anthony Harford welcomed all to the most anticipated race day on the local racing calendar. Harford thank NGC for their continued involvement with the Arima Race Club (ARC) and thier sponsorship of the Trinidad Derby.
Vice President of NGC, Curtis Mohammed in his address, said: “On behalf of the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago, I thank our co-host the Arima Race Club, who keep the sport of horse racing alive and kicking. The sport has been around in this country since the 18th century, which really something to be proud of. NGC appreciates some of the challenges of the club as it strives to grow its industry and enhance it’s appeal to a much wider audience.”
Mohammed noted that this was the third year NGC has sponsored the event. “Again we have continued to give it the title of NGC CNG Derby in recognition of our pivotal role we will be playing in the future with regards to the conversion to CNG by the travelling public.”
Trainer John O’Brien who saddles triple crown aspirant War of Words stated that he was very happy with his charges. He said he is not worried about the horses but more about the owners.
Baskaran Bassawh revealed why he brought in the world’s leading rider Javier Castellano to ride Bigman In Town. “When they told me I have to bring in a very good rider to win this event, I said to myself, if I am bringing a jockey then let me bring in the best, so Javier Castellano will be here to ride Bigman In Town.
Owner Wight was very clear on his intent with War of Words. He commented, “My view has not changed since before the Guineas. He will run well as he always give his best. There are a few really good horses in the race but O’Brien has him ready.”
In the 1,350-metre NGC Diamond Stakes on main track, Crime Of Passion, the new sprinting sensation will race from stall eight. Stablemate King Whistler will face widest from the nine hole. Former Stewards Cup winner Signal Alert from the stable of Mendez will race from stall six while stablemate Readbetweenthelines will jump from stall two in the Grade Two event.
