Leader Caribs avenge Harvard loss
Just over two months ago, reigning champion GNC Gatorade Harvard took a massive first leg win against Caribs to spark a quest to retain local rugby’s top crown. But, on Saturday, Caribs had the last laugh as the league’s most successful club, which recently overstepped Harvard at the top of the T&T Rugby Football Union (TTRFU) Toyota Championship Division table, extended its lead to six points following a revenge 16-11 win over the same team, at Harvard’s Pitch, Queen’s Park Savannah.
Richard Staglon scored a try and a couple of successful penalties from Don Rojas gave Caribs 11, while Ryan Hinckson also scored a pair of penalties to keep Harvard in the contest at the half, 11-6. In the second period, Caribs surged once again and earned what proved to be an unassailable lead with a try, before Joseph Quashie cut the deficit to six points with a consolation try, which at least for the losing team, Harvard, earned it a bonus point.
The result put Caribs just a step away from claiming the title. Its destiny remains in its own hands, while Harvard will need to win its remaining two fixtures to stand a chance. In Caribs’ path now is the traditional match-of-the-season, the Bruno Browne trophy/league fixture against Northern which is to be played on the final day of the league season. Caribs is on a bye next weekend, and will do what it can to prepare for the do-or-die curtain closer.
To guarantee its first league title since 2011, Caribs will need to earn a bonus point against Northern, once Harvard takes a bonus point win in its next league fixture against Royalians. The bonus point is achieved either by scoring four or more tries, or losing a fixture by less than seven points. Harvard, which remains with a match in hand, will complete its fixtures against Royalians and Rainbow, respectively.
Also playing on Saturday were Royalians and bottom-of-the-table Rainbow. Royalians took a 45-14 win for its second victory against the same team this season. Northern was on a bye. This weekend, Northern will meet Rainbow.
