Show Passion in NGC Diamond Stakes
A total of 135 horses were entered for the 11 very competitive races on the National Gas Company sponsored Republic Day Race Day which will be run off tomorrow at Arima.
The purse money is one of the biggest for the season just shy of $1 million. Eight overseas riders will be flying in to participate, and seven overseas jockey will be riding in the 13-horse Derby, which carries a purse of $500,000.
Today we look at the co-feature, the Grade Two—NGC Diamond Stakes over 1,350 metres. The top class sprinters in the country will hook up in the $150,000 purse event.
The field is headed by the speedy Crime of Passion which will be partnered by Rajiv Maragh. This three-year-old chestnut colt has been impressive in his three wins and lost nothing in defeat when going down by 1/2 a length to Wild Excitement on his second start when racing with 57.0 kilos.
That day he did not break alertly but certainly set the record straight next time in the Santa Rosa dash over 1,200 metres when flying out from stall one and never seeing a rival. The time recorded was a shade under the track record. Crime of Passion posted a time of 1:09.3 for the trip.
In his last start he again toyed with the opposition when 6 3/4 length clear of Secret American over 1,200 metres in 1:11.1. The Raroma Stable owned son of Lawyer Ron will win the Diamond Stakes doing handsprings for Maragh. He has had a great preparation and O’Brien will lead in this winner.
Of his other eight rivals only two have the form and class to make a race of it and they are the Glenn Mendez pair of Readbetweendlines and Signal Alert. The former will be ridden by Javier Castellano who will be jetted in to partner Derby Favourite Bigman In Town for owner Baskaran Bassawh.
Signal Alert will be ridden by Carlos Montalvo, who on his last visit won the Gold Cup aboard Cactus Amour.
Mendez who holds has the honour of training not one but two Triple Crown winners at Santa Rosa Park, has two worthy challenger but on tomorrow they will not be able to bother ‘the Pretender to the Sprint Crown."
Everyone knows how talented the Bentley Boys owned Readbetweendlines is and though he has been galloping superbly, he is not ready for Crime of Passion. The same sentiments can be expressed for the former Stewards Cup winner Signal Alert.
