Red Force fails to stop Sunrisers
Just hours before the match, he was cleared of match-fixing allegations and Tisara Perera celebrated at the expense of the T&T Red Force, slamming an unbeaten 57 off 32 balls to lead the Hyderabad Sunrisers to a four-wicket win at the PCA Stadium in Chandigarh in their Karbonn Smart Champions League T20 clash yesterday. Prior to the match it was alleged by a local newspaper that the Mumbai Crime Branch had gotten information from a bookie and was investigating the Hyderabad foursome of Perera, Hanuma Vihari, Ashish Ready and Karan Sharma, the man who hit the winning six.It is alleged that the foresome was involved in the fixing of a match against the Pune Warriors on April 17 in the Indian Premier League.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cleared all four players to play in the match and in the end they hurt the T&T boys.Chasing a credable 161 for victory, after Darren Bravo had scored an elegant 66 for T&T, Perera was brilliant and although Sunil Narine grabbed an astonishing four for nine off his quota, the game was still lost. The Sunrisers motto is :’We will rise to any challenge’ and this they did because when Perera walked to the crease, they were facing down the barrel of a gun. Soon after he was the man holding the gun as Denesh Ramdin’s team could not stop him. His innings brought his team right back into the contest and they closed out the win with three balls to spare in the final over. The Sri Lankan slammed four sixes and four fours in his innings and got help from Darren Sammy (15) to take the Sunrisers to their first win.
Earlier, Shikar Dhawan called correctly at the toss and decided to take first use of the green-tinged pitch. With Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma capable of speed in excess of 90 miles per hour the task looked daunting for the Red Force. Opener Lendl Simmons made it even more so by playing an atrocious shot, first ball to Steyn and was heading back to the hut even before the announcer has called his name as the opener. The Sunrisers would have been licking their chops because the man walking in has his struggles with the short ball. However, Bravo substituted that uneasiness with class and reeled off some magnificent shots. He decided to fight fire with fire and soon Dhawan and his boys were retreating.
The dapper left hander was ferocious on the pull and sublime with his off-side play, as Calypso cricket made an appearance at the Champions League. His innings was by far the best display in this tournament so far and it won the approval of the crowd. He and Jason Mohammed added 69 runs off 41 balls to not only pull T&T back into the contest but give them the advantage heading down to what is now called the happy ‘half hour’.
However, both would fall and the Red Force’s acceleration took a dive. Bravo swatted Sharma to cover for 66 off 44 balls with five fours and four sixes and Mohammed fell for 19 off 27 balls.
Towards the end of the innings skipper Denesh Ramdin with a 15-ball 21 and Navin Stewart with a 14-ball 17, took T&T to their final tally of 160 for eight off 20 overs. West Indies captain Darren Sammy was the best of the bowlers with 2/21, while there were two wickets apiece for man of the match Perera and Sharma. The T&T boys will leave Chandigarh tomorrow for Ahmedabad where they play match number three against the Titans of South Africa on Monday.
