Duckworth, Lewis puts Red Force into semis
God is a Trini! There is this popular saying back home, and the T&T cricketers here would definitely believe that. When they prayed for no rain they got none and when they did pray for rain, the heavens opened, giving them a six-run victory on the Duckworth/Lewis method over a fighting Titans in their third match of the Karbonn Smart Champions League T20 tournament at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad, India yesterday.
With the second match between the Hyderabad Sunrisers and Brisbane Heat being abandoned, T&T qualified for the semifinals along with the Chennai Super Kings, who they will play in their final group match tomorrow in a game that will be of academic interest.
With the Titans needing 36 runs in three overs to overhaul T&T’s total of 188 and AB de Villiers looking red hot, the Red Force got a reprieve and now heads to their final match with their ambitions in this tournament still intact.
When the rains came the Par Score was 159 and Titans were 153 for six, losing by six runs. After Evin Lewis (70) and Darren Bravo (63) had batted the Titans into submission, they set them a winning target off 189 runs.
Skipper Henry Davids and Jacques Rudolph came out all guns firing and made batting look easy. Samuel Badree went for five fours in his first over and it was game on. Davids and Rudolph posted 65 runs in just 6.4 overs when Emrit produced a beautiful yorker and timber was on the ground. Davids smashed 42 from 22 balls with six fours and two sixes.
With the runs still flowing skipper Denesh Ramdin decided to go for the sixth bowler in Lendl Simmons and it paid rich dividends. The man considered the one with the golden arm grabbed two wickets in quick succession in addition to keeping the scoring down, and Titans were reduced to 88 for four.
De Villiers and Farhaan Behardien brought the Titans right back as they struck 22 from a Rayad Emrit over and it took the wiles of Sunil Narine on a gamble from Ramdin to break the partnership. Narine got Behardien for 29 off 19 balls and sent back David Wiese in the same over to keep T&T in the hunt.
However, de Villiers was still around but the rain put paid to any hopes he had of bringing home the win. It was T&T’s day as Moko Jumbies and 35 degree heat at the start turned into carnival like celebrations at the watery end.
Earlier, the T&T boys recovered after the early loss of Simmons to post an excellent score. With the ball coming nicely unto the bat, Lewis and Bravo used the hardness of the new ball to good effect and missiles were flying all over the place.
Simmons continued his struggles with the bat, falling for another duck as he was bowled by de Lange. Lewis, as he always does, plays no bowler with respect and he opened the floodgates in the third over from Morne Morkel. The top South African speedster saw some amazing shots played—none more awesome than the square drive over point for six. That third over cost 18, including a six and two fours and set the tone for the innings.
Not to be outdone, the dapper Bravo followed suit in the next over and struck three fours off Marchant de Lange. Next over, Lewis smashed a six and two fours. The left handed combination realised 59 runs from the power play and never looked back. Lewis raced to his fifty off just 21 balls with four sixes and a five fours. Soon the 100 was up in 10.2 overs and Titans hadn’t a clue how to contain the man from Santa Cruz and his partner from Moruga.
With wickets in hand and overs going, Lewis threw his hand at everything, finally getting out for 70 off 35 balls in which he scored seven fours and had the crowd looking for cover on five occasions.
After he left Bravo took over and played some audacious shots. He raced to 50 off 37 balls and soon fell for a well compiled 63 off 44 balls with five fours and four sixes.
Towards the end of the innings, Tobago all rounder Navin Stewart showed his value by hammering 23 off 15 balls with two sixes and a four, as the Red Force ended on 188 for six.
T&T finished second in the group with eight points the same as the Titans but have a better net run rate. The Red Force have a net run rate of +0.492, while the Titans have a net run rate of +0.166. Only a massive loss tomorrow will prevent T&T from going through to the semifinals.
