Awesome Red Force storms into semis
A thoroughly professional and clinical performance from T&T have given them the right to contest the semi-finals of the Karbonn Smart Champions League T20 tournament in New Delhi, India.
On Mahatma Ghandi Ji's birthday, the Red Force spoiled the celebrations for the Indians, beating the Chennai Super Kings on this national holiday. Remarkably, the Red Force also beat Chennai Super Kings on Ghandi's birthday in 2011 in Chennai.
T&T went into the game looking to avoid finishing in third spot on net run rate but at the end of the night, they were leaving the Feroz Shah Kotla ground the number one team in Group B.
Lendl Simmons continued his great comeback with a magnificent batting and bowling performance to give the Red Force a crushing eight-wicket win.
Taking 2/10 together with Rayad Emrit's 3/21, Simmons helped bowl out the locals for 118. With the bat, he contributed a rapid 63.
T&T needed to get their runs within 17.4 overs to top the group; they did so in 15.1 overs. Simmons got his runs from just 41 balls with five fours and four sixes, while Lewis with whom he forged a first-wicket partnership of 79, continued his great tournament with 38 off 35 balls hitting six fours along the way.
Red Force, the only remaining non-Indian team in this tournament, will now play the Keiron Pollard's Mumbai Indians in the semi-finals on Saturday at New Delhi.
Earlier, Ramdin won the toss and given the nature of the match, needing to keep ahead of the Titans run rate, he decided to field first.
With 10 eager and focused men he ran unto the field to do battle against the Chennai Super Kings and 25,000 fans in the stands. With the Mumbai Indians winning the first game on the evening against the Perth Scorchers, the fans were in a festive mood and wanted another win from the best Indian Premier League team, the Super Kings.
Ravi Rampaul sent the first cheer to the thirty of so T&T supporters here, when he dropped Mike Hussey's stumps to the ground. The Aussie, currently in the headlines here for revealing that arrested Meiyappan Gurunath was the man running the show at Chennai Super Kings, would not have done himself any favours with his boss N Srinivasan.
The early loss of Hussey, brought in the in form Suresh Raina and runs started to flow. He looked very good and had the fans in Delhi dancing as he and Murali Vijay had the best stand of the innings: 55 runs from 39 balls.
Then came the 'man with the golden arm' and T&T was back in business. Simmons bowled Vijay for 27 off 24 balls including four fours and then delivered the coup de gras when he sent back Raina for 38 off 29 balls--three fours and a six.
'Mahi' was still there and the danger man to T&T's ambitions. However, just as he started to wield his willow, Emrit had him for 25 off 25 balls, with two fours. The crowd which stood at 45,000 for the Mumbai match was reduced to a mere 10,000. As they started to leave as Dhoni was heading back into the dugout. It was a case of Mahi gone, man gone!
With Sunil Narine as stingy as ever at the other end, wickets were falling to the other bowlers. The mystery man finished with the excellent figures of 4-0-12-0. Emrit and Rampaul ran through the rest of the batting with former finishing with 3/21, the latter 2/31 and Simmons 2/10 off two overs.
