Clear leader expected in SSFL’s N Zone today
A clear leader may materialise in the North Zone today when the top three teams take on teams in the lower half of the standings in the most competitive zone in this season’s BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League, in the second match day of the second round of league action. St Mary’s College and St Anthony’s College, separated only by goal-difference share the top position with 16 points each. Both teams have shown themselves to be the league’s most serious title contenders, losing just one and drawing one match each after seven matches. St Mary’s will take on fourth-placed Fatima College at St Mary’s College Ground from 3.45 pm, the same time as all other matches in the five zones.
The two teams met last month, with the Saints taking the edge in a 4-3 victory over Fatima. Chinua Bernard, St Mary’s leading scorer bagged the winning goal and his second in added time, in that triumph for the Saints. Meanwhile, a plucky Diego Martin North, despite sitting second from bottom, has proved to be a thorn in the side of some of the top teams in the zone, scoring goals against every team but East Mucurapo. Diego Martin and St Anthony’s are scheduled to do battle tomorrow. The first leg between Diego Martin and St Anthony’s ended in a 3-1 win for the visiting Tigers.
In other zones, Central’s Big-Five champion Carapichaima East, the only team with an unblemished record this season will be seeking its seventh win in as many matches when it hosts second-from-bottom, Vishnu Boys Hindu College. South leader, Presentation College San Fernando is also unbeaten and holds a five-point gap between itself and second-placed Shiva Boys. Pres will meet rock-bottom Pleasantville. In the East, St Augustine, which is six points clear over El Dorado West meets fourth-placed Arima North. Two matches will be played in Tobago, including Speyside’s trip to Mt Pleasant to face sixth-placed Bishop’s high.
