Saints aim to go clear against Diego
Defending zonal winner St Anthony’s College is on a bye today, giving St Mary’s College the perfect opportunity to go clear at the top of the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League’s (SSFL) North Zone standings for the first time this season, when it takes a trip to face Diego Martin North from 3.45 pm, the same kick off time for all matches today. Only four zones see action today with the Central Zone out of action until Saturday. St Mary’s will be seeking full points against a team it won 3-1 in a first-leg meeting last month. Diego Martin, a plucky team which has scored in all but two of seven matches sits sixth in the seven-team standings after securing just one win (against Malick Secondary) after all its efforts.
The Saints sit in a joint-first position edged only on goal-difference by St Anthony’s, with both teams on an equal record of six wins a draw and one loss. A win will put the Saints on top, three days ahead of the Battle of the Saints, a highly anticipated fixture between St Anthony’s and St Mary’s. Meanwhile, a loss for St Mary’s may see East Mucurapo take top spot, also for the first time this season as the vastly improved team, which handed St Anthony’s its first league defeat of the campaign less than two weeks ago, takes on Malick Secondary at the Hasely Crawford Stadium’s training pitch, in Mucurapo. Mucurapo sits two points behind the two “Saints” on 17 points.
In the East Zone, St Augustine (22 points), which leads the pack by six points ahead of El Dorado West will take a trip to meet third-placed Trinity College East (12 points), which has a match in hand. South Zone leader Presentation College San Fernando is on a bye, giving current runner-up Shiva Boys a chance to close the deficit to four points when it host fourth-placed Mayaro Secondary, at Penal. Only two matches will be played in Tobago today. Leader Speyside takes on last placed Goodwood, while Bishop’s High meets Pentecostal L&L.
