W Connection, Pt Fortin remain perfect as Army, Caledonia stay winless
Former champion DirecTV W Connection and league debutant Pt Fortin Civic FC stayed joint top of the 2013/2014 Digicel T&T Pro League after each recorded their third win from as many matches at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, on Tuesday night.
However, down at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, defending league champion Defence Force continued its miserable start to its title defence as Trevin Caesar’s hat-trick inspired third placed North East Stars to a 3-1 triumph, while Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA, second last year, got its first point in three matches via a 1-1 draw with Police going into the Fifa International break.
In the feature match at Mucurapo, Defence Force, a 4-3 winner by penalty kicks over San Juan Jabloteh after a 2-2 draw in their First Citizens Cup semifinal on Friday night at Couva, was hopeful on building on that victory.
However, six minutes after a goalless first-half, Caesar put the Stars, coached by former Defence Force winger Angus Eve, ahead only for Josimar Belgrave to get the “Teteron Boys” level in the 66th.
With 15 minutes left in the contest, Defence Force was in with a chance of securing its first points of the league campaign after a 3-1 loss to Central FC to kick off the season on September 13.
But it was not to be as Caesar regained the lead for Stars in the 81st minute. He completed his hat-trick with two minutes left in regulation time to seal his team’s second league win in three outings, while ending a two-match losing skid, 1-0 to Pt Fortin in the league and a 2-1 First Citizens Cup quarterfinal loss to Central FC.
With the win, Stars is now alone in third spot with six points from three matches. Stars trails W Connection and Pt Fortin which won 3-2 and 1-0 over San Juan Jabloteh and St Ann’s Rangers, respectively.
The “Savonetta Boys” of W Connection—still smarting from their 3-2 penalty-kicks loss to ten-man Central FC in their First Citizens Cup semifinals—looked on course for a lopsided win.
Hashim Arcia set up Colombian Camilio Ortega Diaz to fire past goalkeeper Keston Malchan after only eight minutes while defender Mekeil Williams (10th) doubled the advantage with a blast from close range after a failed Jabloteh clearance.
Four minutes later, Arcia got on the scoresheet himself, guiding a cross from striker Jerrel Britto past the helpless Malchan as a rout looked a big possibility.
On the half-hour mark, Malchan did well to keep out a Diaz effort and four minutes after the restart his goal was under seige again with Kurt Frederick forcing the San Juan custodian into another save.
W Connection then eased up somewhat as the Jabloteh offence came to life with second-half strikes from their two most experienced campaigners in Rennie Britto in the 69th and captain Kerry Baptiste, nine minutes from the final whistle.
In the end, W Connection held on for the win, which looked more closer than was the case to stay ahead of Pt Fortin on goal-difference, after the latter got a 16th minute strike from Andre Alexis via an Andre Toussaint assist to beat Rangers goalkeeper Terrence Lewis and earn his team a 1-0 win.
Also on Tuesday, Police’s Jasimar Ashers scored three minutes into added on time to salvage a 1-1 draw for his team against Caledonia, which is now winless in eight matches combined in the Concacaf Champions League and domestically.
It was the second point of the season for Caledonia in the league after 0-0 draw with Central FC preceded a 3-0 loss to Stars.
The league now takes a break due to the Fifa International dates on Friday and Tuesday as well as the First Citizens Cup final on October 18, at Mucurapo and will resume on October 22.
