Ince adds two more Youth Parapan gold
National swimmer Shanntol Ince doubled her gold medal tally to four on the final day of competition at the third Youth Parapan American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, yesterday. The 18-year-old Ince, who won the 400m freestyle (S9) gold medal on Thursday in 5:30.41 and followed up with another gold in the 100 metres backstroke (S9) 1:23.12 on Friday, added precious gold medals in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly finals at the Jannete Campbell Swimming Complex, National High Performance Sports Centre, known as CeNARD (Centro Nacional de Alto Rendimiento Deportivo).
First she won the 100m butterfly (S9) in 1:21.89 ahead of Mexicans Isabel Martinez (1:45.85) and Itzel Garcia (1:51.34) and then closed off with her fourth gold from as many swims, in the 100m freestyle (S9) in 1:12.86 ahead of Martinez (1:29.63) and Costa Rica’s Christiane Buchheim (1:32.63) The lone T&T representative at the Games, Ince’s four gold haul placed T&T seventh on the medal standings. With a few events left, Brazil was already clear winners with 209 medals over (102 gold, 65 silver, 42 bronze), followed by Mexico with 155 (58 gold, 55 silver, 42 bronze), hosts Argentina with 133 (38 gold, 51 silver, 44 bronze), Venezuela (26 gold, 18 silver, 22 bronze), Colombia (13 gold, 11 silver, 14 bronze) and Ecuador (seven gold, two silver, seven bronze).
It was the first time that Ince is competing at the youth event while she also represented T&T at the Paralympic Games in London last year.
