Daniel’s trick seals Dames semis spot
Teenager Shaquille Daniel came up big for Notre Dame when he fired in a hat-trick to secure a 5-3 win over Defence Force, and with it, the last semifinal spot in the Men’s Open Division of the T&T Hockey Board’s National Indoor Championship on Tuesday night at the Jean Pierre Complex.
Going into the match the Dames occupied the fourth and final semifinal playoffs spot with nine points while Defence Force with seven, needed nothing less than victory.
In the seventh minute, Daniel eased the Dames nerves with the opener, but fellow national player, midfielder Marcus James, leveled for Defence Force three minutes later only for Chad Pedro (11th) to score for the Dames and then Shane Legerton for Defence Force in the 14th for a 2-2 scoreline in the lively contest.
However, the Dames went into the half, with a two-goal cushion after Daniel, who was playing against his father, former national player and Commonwealth Games rifle shooting medallist, Roger Daniel, and Pedro netted one each again, in the 16th and 20th minute.
Five minutes after the restart, Defence Force clawed it ways back into the contest with national defender Javon Woodward getting his first of the match for a 4-3 deficit.
But that was as close as the “Teteron Boys” would get as Daniel then completed his hat-trick in the 38th minute to seal the win and carry his team to 12 points, the same as Paragon but with an inferior goal-difference of plus-11 to the third placed finisher’s, plus-12.
In the other men’s match, Jordan Vieira scored a beaver-trick to lead Corona Fatima past Malvern 9-7 and avoided the cellar-spot.
...Malvern, Defence Force set up Mixed Vets final
