Maharaj buys sales topper for $195,000
Owner Shivam Maharaj showed he means business when he purchased a yearling by Charismatic Cat/Go Wid D Flow just after 2.30 pm yesterday. The yearling was the day’s sales topper at $195,000.
On a very sunny day, there was no dead heat for the top money spinner for the Stud Farm Association’s (SFA) Yearlings Sales, 2013. Last year Guyanese businessman, Nazrudeen Mohammed bought a yearling by Gold Market/Gin Sling which proved to be the sales topper for $160,000. This year, Maharaj set the record straight and outbidded the Guyana outfit called The Jumbo Jet Auto Sales, whose members were conspicuous by their enthusiasm. That outfit spent some $400,000.
But just after 2.30 pm, when Jamaican auctioneer Brian Rickman brought the hammer down on Lot 55—the chestnut son of Charismatic Cat which was the property of Myrna Hadeed and consigned by Poon Tip Stud Farm, Maharaj came away with it.
Of the 120 lots which were in the SFA catalogue, 29 did not face the starter or walk into the ring at Santa Rosa Park.
The Jumbo Jet Auto Sales is the largest Agricultural Machinery Company in Guyana, and the syndicate, headed by Rommel Jagroop, purchased eleven horses at a cost of $800,000.
Deo Maharaj purchased Lot 23 for $185,000, a dark bay colt by Charismatic Cat/Blushing Bride. This colt was consigned by Poon Tip Stud Farm Limited. Another yearling which was sought after was Lot 27 which cost $165,000. This was a bay colt by Gold Market/Burning Red which was bought by top trainer Glenn Mendez.
Mendez also purchased a chestnut filly, daughter of Marahel/Joy for $185,000.
Owner of Bruceontheloose, Gervan Mouttet, purchased a bay colt by Ten Meropa/Latonia, Lot 71 for $105,000.
Among the horsemen who were part of the occasion were: Kama Maharaj, Joe Hadeed, John O’Brien, Harold Chadee and Douglas Bennett.
Significantly, the sales yesterday bettered last year’s $3.2 million with $3.43 million being spent at Santa Rosa Park for this edition of the SFA Yearling Sales.
