Presentation, Speyside in Big-Five opener
Finalist in last year’s competition, Presentation College of San Fernando will meet first ever Tobago Zone league winner Speyside Secondary, when the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Big-Five competition kicks off today with a lone play-off match for a spot in the semifinal.
The fixture will kick off at 5 pm, at Skinner Park, San Fernando, in the second match of a double-header, which is set to open with a Girls’ Big-Four clash between surprise South Zone champion, Fyzabad Secondary and familiar Tobago outfit, Bishop’s High School, from 3 pm.
The second semifinal of the girls’ competition will be played on Wednesday between North Zone winner, Bishop’s Anstey (Port-of-Spain) and East Zone powerhouse St Augustine Secondary, at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima.
Today’s Boys’ clash is set to provide sparks with one team, Presentation College of San Fernando seeking a return to the final and ultimately the title, and Speyside, aiming to prove its worth with a hoard of capable midfielders and forwards, including Marcus Caesar, Weah Adams, Brandon Benjamin, Simeon Skeete and others. Presentation, which has been sound defensively and potent in attack remains with its top scorer last season, Shackiel Henry, as well as the in-form Anjel Williams. The team, coached by fellow T&T Under-17 headman Shawn Cooper, lost the Big-Five final last season in a 4-3 thriller to Carapichaima East Secondary.
The winner of today’s match will book a place in the semifinal against Central’s new champion, Chaguanas North in a fixture scheduled for Thursday, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.
Meanwhile, the other semifinal is set for Wednesday, between St Mary’s College (North Zone), which has made a return for the first time since 2009, and St Augustine Secondary, the most dominant school in the SSFL this season, which was held to only one draw, while winning all other league matches.
The final is carded for November 4, at a venue to be determined.
