St Augustine aims for Big-Four, Big-Five finals
North Zone champion St Mary’s College will meet East Zone giant, St Augustine Secondary School, in the first semifinal of the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Boys Big-Five competition, today. The match, which kicks off at 4 pm, is carded to follow a double-header opener between Girls Big-Four semifinalists, Bishop’s Anstey (Port-of-Spain) and St Augustine Secondary, which is set to kick off at 2 pm. One team has already made it to the final of the Girls’ Big-Four competition, Bishop’s High School (Tobago) which defeated South Zone winner Fyzabad Secondary in the first semifinal at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on Monday. The match ended goalless after regulation time, before spot-kicks (3-1 in favour of Bishop’s) decided the outcome.
The girls’ final is carded for next Monday. Also set for next Monday is the final of the Big-Five competition. Thus far, Speyside Secondary, first time winner of the Tobago league competition has been eliminated. The team suffered a 5-0 blow to Presentation College of San Fernando, which as a result, secured a berth into the second semifinal against Chaguanas North Secondary. The last-four match will be played at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, on Thursday.
Today’s featured match sees a St Mary’s College team into the big-Four competition for the first time since 2009 when it last lifted the North Zone title. The Jason Edwards-coached team is high off battling against the odds versus the likes of reigning zonal and Coca-Cola InterCol champion St Anthony’s College, which had to settle for an unfamiliar second place. St Augustine, meanwhile, will enter the match confident of both, its ability to restrict St Mary’s and score goals as it has been doing all season. Statistically, St Augustine is the strongest team so far this season, as it has only drawn one match and won all others in league competition.
