National cyclist Varun Maharajh will be looking for more personal records today in the Men's Omnium when the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Leg II pedals off in Aguascalientes, Mexico. At leg one in Manchester, England last month, Maharajh broke two personal bests. In the 4k Individual pursuit, he stopped the clock in four minutes 52.818 seconds and in the 1k time trial, finished in 1:07.807, both personal bests. The Bicentenary Velodrome in Aguascalientes is 1,100 metres above sea level and breathing may be a problem for endurance riders, such as Maharajh.
Tomorrow, Njisane Phillip, who became a household name in T&T, after his performance at the 2012 London Olympics, will be in action in the Men's Sprint event. Phillip will be looking for more precious metal after earning sprint silver in Manchester, behind German Robert Forstemann. The organisers believe records may fall, as Aguascalientes is conducive for sprinting. Phillip, 22, will face the starter again on Saturday in the Keirin event.Joining Phillip and Maharajh in Mexico will be Team DPS (Drive Phase Sport), led by Quincy Alexander.
Alexander will compete in the 1k time trial, while Jude Codrington and Justin Roberts will team up with Alexander in the Men's Team Sprint. Gary Acosta will serve as T&T's manager for this leg, which ends on Saturday. The final leg of the Cup will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico from January 17-19.
