T&T ready to host CAZOVA Championships

Friday, December 6, 2013

The hectic schedule of events hosted by the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) for the 2013 season will conclude when the Youth (Under-18) Championship ends on Sunday  at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena. Competition started yesterday. The tournament now in its fourth year for the boys and third for the girls was originally carded to be held in Guadeloupe and Martinique earlier this year, but had to be postponed due to a lack of teams.

However a few months later, the four-day event hosted by the T&T Volleyball Federation under the presidency of Daymian Stewart is set to take place still with a low number of teams involved.
The teams featuring in T&T are the host country, Barbados, Jamaica, Bahamas and US Virgin Islands boys  team which will arrive on Thursday night and will play two matches on Friday due a flight problems caused by bad weather. The boys' competition will feature defending champions US Virgin Islands, two-time bronze winners and host T&T, 2007 winner and 2012 third placed finisher Barbados and Jamaica while in the girls competition, tow-time champions T&T, Bahamas and Barbados will do battle.

At the Technical Meeting held at the Le Sportel Inn, Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence on Wednesday December 4 and  which involved CAZOVA president Mushtaque Mohammed, head of the Control Committee and Margaret Graham, CAZOVA Secretary and president of the Haiti Volleyball Federation and officials off all the participating teams, the round-robin format, rules and regulations as well as the points system were explained to all teams and agreed upon. In both categories each team will play each other once in the round-robin at the end of which the top two teams based on the standings will contest the gold medal match on Sunday afternoon.

Other members of the Control Committee present were Brian Charles (Referee Commission), Philippe Lirus (CAZOV Photographer Delegate); Jose Ramon Perez Vento (Referees Commission president) and Daymian Stewart (T&T Volleybal Federation president).
