Crystal Mahabir won the women's WUKO (World United Karate Organisation) black belt division title when the second Caribbean Cup Karate Championships was held at the Maloney Sport Complex on November 30.
Mahabir, who's specialty is kickboxing, competed in karate for the first time and still proved to be the strongest.
Team Elite was the dominant club, winning most of the medals on a day that attracted 150 competitors. Some of the other clubs that participated were No Limit Martial Arts, Diamond System Martial Arts, Hoben School of Karate and Volta Muida Capoeira of T&T.
For the first time the Brazilian martial arts of Capoeira was represented by Instructor Quan David, while bare-knuckle kumite (sparing) also made its debut at the event, and was well received.
Miguel Owens, Lester Taylor, Gerald Perkins and David demonstrated excellent skill in the WUKO Black Belt division in both kumite and kata. Kyoshi Jose Andrade (Aikido master) and Sensei Willie Valdes (Goju-Ryu expert) were special guests at the event.
