Akeem’s body comes home on Sunday
The body of the late T&T defender Akeem Adams, is expected to arrive home on Sunday.
His cousin Roland Dick said Adams’ mother Ancilla had confirmed in a telephone conversation with the family on Sunday night that she would be bringing her son’s body home next Sunday.
“As to funeral arrangements, a venue or a date, Ancilla has to be part of that discussion,” he said. “After their arrival, she will proceed with funeral arrangements.”
Dick said since Adam’s death on December 31, the family had not held any wake, on instructions from Ancilla “not to do anything without her.”
Instead, he said, the close-knit family has been gathering at the home of the home of his grandmother, at Salazar Trace, Point Fortin, on a nightly basis. “We are a Christian family and we have just been gathering at this venue to give each other support and strength.
“The last couple years have really been trying for Ancilla, who lost her husband in October 2011. We are just trying to be strong for her when she comes home.”
Ancilla rushed to the bedside of her ailing son at a hospital in Budapest, Hungary, when he suffered a heart attack in September, the month after he joined the Hungarian football team Ferencvaros. After his heart attack, Adams, 22, who represented this country in the 2009 Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, had his left leg amputated to alleviate circulatory problems, as he awaited a heart transplant at the Városmajori Heart Clinic in Budapest.
On December 29, after suffering a massive stroke, Adams slipped into a coma and never regained consciousness.
