National cyclist Njisane Phillip was still warded at a specialist hospital in California, USA, up to press time yesterday, as doctors were not satisfied with his progress.
Phillip, 22, who has been hospitalised since Friday for a swollen kidney, was hoping to be discharged yesterday, but remained warded for further examination.
Gregory D'Andrade, vice-president of the T&T Cycling Federation, who has been in contact with Njisane and his family from Trinidad, spoke to Phillip's stepfather Phillip Whiteman yesterday.
Whiteman informed D'Andrade that Phillip's kidney was still swollen and the doctors were not comfortable discharging him from hospital. The medical staff performed tests yesterday morning, and planned to do more tests at 4 pm, California time (8 pm T&T time). Phillip and his family were also hoping to find out last night what caused his kidney to swell.
Phillip had an excellent 2013, and was recognised for his efforts, as he was nominated for four awards at the Spirit of Sport Awards, held in T&T on December 28. The highlight of his year was a men's sprint silver medal at leg one of the UCI (International Cycling Union) World Cup in England, last November.
