Fatima, Providence in stylish starts

Nataion­al youth team duo, Teague Mar­cano of Fa­ti­ma Col­lege and Dana-Lee De Gannes of Prov­i­dence Girls' High School both scored braces to lead their re­spec­tive schools to vic­to­ries when the T&T Hock­ey Board Sec­ondary Schools Out­door League flicked off un­der blis­ter­ing hot sun at St James Bar­racks, West­ern Main Road, St James, on Wednes­day.

In the open­ing match of the day, De Gannes, who al­so plays for Notre Dame, and school­mate Sha­ni­ah De Fre­itas of Shandy Carib Mag­no­lias got the goals for Prov­i­dence in a 3-0 blank­ing of ri­vals, St Joseph Con­vent, Port-of-Spain.

Malvern's ris­ing star, Mar­cano and Jor­dan Weekes' with a lone strike com­bined to lead Fa­ti­ma past St Mary's Col­lege, 3-1 in an­oth­er clash of long-time ri­vals. For the "Saints" Craig Cock­burn of Queen's Park got their lone item.

To­day, match­es con­tin­ue at the same venue from 3.15 pm with Holy Name Con­vent and South East Port-of-Spain squar­ing off in a girl's con­test fol­lowed by QRC and South East Port-of-Spain boys one hour lat­er.

In an ef­fort to en­cour­age par­tic­i­pa­tion at the youth lev­el and in­crease the num­bers in­volved in the sport, the TTHB and its De­vel­op­ment Com­mit­tee have made a con­cert­ed ef­fort to get tra­di­tion­al hock­ey play­ing schools as well as schools in­volved in its De­vel­op­ment Pro­gramme in­volved.

The league com­pris­es six boys teams and five girls teams in all, with match­es be­ing played every Wednes­day and Fri­day un­til Feb­ru­ary 28.

For the schools which have re­cent­ly be­come in­volved in the TTHB's De­vel­op­ment Pro­gramme the TTHB will host its Sec­ondary Schools Mi­nor-League Tour­na­ment on March 21 from 8 am to 5 pm at the Na­tion­al Hock­ey Cen­tre, Tacarigua, for schools in the North, West and East Zones and at Debe High School, Debe for schools in the South and Cen­tral Zones.

The spon­sors of this league are the Sport Com­pa­ny of T&T and Blue Wa­ters.
