The 10th Kia around Gasparee Open water swim will be held on Saturday February 15, at 9:30am.
This year the swim will start and end on the northern side of the island, St Ignatius bay (Island yacht Charters) and go clockwise around the island, a distance of 5,800 metres.
Two new categories have been introduced. The first includes swimmers with leg fins, hand pulls or both and the second includes a relay team of two swimmers where the first swimmer will swim from St Ignatius bay's starting point to Winn's bay on the south side of Gasparee Island, then his or her relay partner will exchange and swim from Winn's bay to St Ignatius bay.
Prizes will be awarded to the top ten male & female as well as first place for all masters 25 years plus in age groups of five years male and female. In the two new categories, prizes will be awarded to swimmers with aids 1st-3rd places and the relay 1st-3rd places. A special incentive of a hamper worth $1,000 will be given to the swimmer to break Ryan Mendes record of 1hr 18mins which was achieved in 2010.
Top open water swimmer Christian Marsden, winner of the 5,000 meter Maracas open water classic in September 2013, has already entered as well as top female distance swimmer 16 year old Theana Hay. Thirty master swimmers have also entered including six-time winner from 2004-2009, Richard Knaggs.
Entry forms can be obtained from all clubs in A.S.A.T.T. as well as members of the Trinity Masters swim club.
