The eight Betting Shops which have been closed since December are expected to reopen on Monday, according to a media release issued by the Bookmakers Association of Trinidad and Tobago.
The media release noted that the eight private betting shops, who are part of the Bookmakers Association's membership, were concerned about the welfare of their employees.
"At a recent meeting with the Betting Levy Board and the Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, Vasant Bharath, no agreement was reached for the removal of the ten per cent tax the punter has to pay on every bet, which has a negative impact on the betting business and a serious burden on the punter," the media release stated.
The media release continued: "While it's not a good economic decision to reopen, it is important that we do so for the benefit of our 300 employees."
The betting shops will now reopen after a five-week break.
