Only two seconds seperated the top two finishers in the women's category at the 5800 metre KIA Big Swim Around Gasparee Island on February 15, as Syriah David had the stronger kick to edge Theana Hay in a nail-biting finish.
David stopped the clock in one hour, 30 minutes and seven seconds to claim the category in the tenth anniversary swim hosted by the Trinity Masters Swim Club. Shania David (1:40:49) and Megan Charles (1:50:05) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Some 76 swimmers competed at the event, which included the top teenage and masters long distance swimmers in T&T.
Christian Marsden was the overall and men's winner in a time of 1:24:30, followed by Jivon Chee Foon (1:26:46), Andrew Gillette (1:28:56) and John Littlepage (1:29:14), a four-time winner of the Maracas Open Water Classic (2003-2006).
The sponsors of this event were Kia Motors Southern Sales and Service, the Sports Company of TT, Marketing and Distribution Limited, Vemco Limited with Gatorade, HILO Food Stores Limited, Fineline Distributors Limited, Solo Beverages Bottling Company, Blue Waters Limited, Haagen Dazs, Starlite Distributors and Movietowne Limited.
