Recently crowned National Super League champion club Guaya United and its former head coach Ronald La Forest have parted ways.
The two parties, following a meeting mid-way through February, near to the end of the Super League season, agreed to separate because of "major differences in vision and mission", stemming from an incident several weeks prior.
Quoted in a media release yesterday, Guaya United thanked La Forest and former assistant coach Calvin Hughes for their efforts during the campaigns of both the Eastern Counties Football Union championship and the National Super League. "Mr La Forest's experience served the community and our club in an excellent manner."
The statement said that La Forest and Hughes chose to attend an invitational football tournament in the United States, during a crucial period for the club, which was preparing for the second round of Super League matches, including fixtures against then title contenders Club Sando and Malabar FC. The club said because of this, it held serious doubts about La Forest's commitment to Guaya.
"Ron's failure during the period January 11-February 3, 2014, to respond positively and timely for an urgent meeting with the Guaya executive on matters relating to his commitment, dedication and training techniques for our programme, required of the executive to take immediate action for the continued success of Guaya United."
The club said neither La Forrest or Hughes coached Guaya during the three-week period. "In these circumstances, both parties met on February 15, 2014, and it was agreed that it would be mutually beneficial for separation to take place. We wish him every success in his future endeavours."
The last six matches were headed by Vernon Haynes and Joseph Weekes as interim coach and assistant coach, respectively. They recorded a five-one win-loss ratio, which led the team to the title. Guaya congratulated Haynes and Weekes for their efforts.
Guaya also thanked the national community and its home fans who have shared in the club's joy at winning the National Super League in its inaugural year of participation.
"The sentiments expressed by the wider population have convinced us that communities provide the best foundation for the complete revival of National football. This is a core belief of Guaya United FC.
