The West Indies soured a Bangla party for 25,000 fans last night and three million today, who were expecting to join hands and sing the Bangladeshi National Anthem at Savar Park near Dhaka in commemoration of the country's Independence from Pakistan in 1971.The Caribbean men came storming back after their opening loss to India in the World T20, to record a 73-run victory.Batting first, West Indies got a blinder from man of the match Dwayne Smith, who lashed 72, and a scrappy 48 from Chris Gayle to post 171 for seven off 20 overs. They then bowled and fielded beautifully to restrict the home team to 98 in 19.1 overs.
The match was effectively over when Bangladesh lost three of their top four batsmen by the fourth over. Samuel Badree picked out the dangerous Tamim Iqbal (5) and left arm seamer Krishmar Santokie made a double strike in two balls sending back Anamul Haque (8) and Shakib Al Hasan (0) to leave the hosts tottering on 16 for three.Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim scored 22 but Badree drove the final nail in the coffin in his last over, claiming Rahim and two other victims to end with 4/15. Santokie was also impressive on the night finishing with 3/17.Bangladesh won the toss and inserted the West Indies, hoping for a poor showing with the willow as the Caribbean men displayed against India.
They were able to hold their own against Chris Gayle who struggled to get the ball off the square for the first 16 overs. The man who they brought in to deal with him, Sohag Gazi had him in all kinds of trouble but was unable to dislodge the big Jamaican. The powerplay brought 36 runs and amazingly there were 18 deliveries that were unscored off–representing half of the overs as the openers failed to rotate the strike.Smith then jumped into top gear and 50 runs came in the next five overs. The powerfully built batsman kept the West Indies run rate over seven at all times, after the powerplay. The right hander killed the effectiveness of the spinners by sweeping them repeatedly, which would have made the fisher folk at Oistins proud. He rushed to his half century with four consecutive fours off Gazi. It came in just 33 balls with eight fours and a six. Gayle all the while was trying to find his range. Balls that would have normally landed into Dhaka City was being flat-batted back to the bowlers.
Smith continued his merry way until he skied an attempted sweep off Mohammed Mahmadullah to leave for 72. His final stats read 43 balls, 10 fours and three sixes.Immediately on his dismissal a promoted Lendl Simmons was stumped off a wide for a 'duck'. Gayle was still there and everyone was just awaiting the moment he would explode, it never happened. He was finally dismissed, brilliantly caught on the long off boundary by Tamim Iqbal for 48 off 48 balls with three fours and two sixes. After this, it was down hill for the Windies as there was a steady procession of batsmen to and from the dugout. Skipper Darren Sammy played a little cameo finishing with 14 not out off five balls. The slippery Al-Amin was impressive and finished with 3/21 off his four overs.
