National left-arm spinner Ricky Jaipaul put in a clinical performance in the final session on day three on Sunday, snatching four wickets to help set up a crushing 10-wicket win for T&T over the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) in the four-day regional tournament at the Queen's Park Oval. Jaipaul's four wickets on debut, dismissed CCC for 330 in its second innings, leaving T&T the simple task of getting 24 runs for victory. Yesterday, openers Adrian Barath and Evin Lewis got to the target without losing a wicket.
At the tea break on Sunday, CCC was on 199/3 in its second innings, still 108 runs behind T&T. Shacaya Thomas was unbeaten on 101, and with him was wicket-keeper Chadwick Walton, not yet off the mark. Shortly before tea, Thomas got his century with a single on the offside. He faced 148 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six. Walton, like the first innings, came out and showed aggression, getting to 28 off 32 balls, which included two fours and two sixes.
Jaipaul, who did not get any wickets in the first innings, then changed the match in one over. Bowling from the southern end of the ground, Jaipaul grabbed the prized wicket of Thomas for 116, trapping him leg before. Thomas spent four hours at the crease, slamming 10 fours and two sixes.Three balls later, Jaipaul got another, as Gabriel held on to a catch at mid-on to dismiss Steven Jacobs for a duck. T&T started to sense victory, as CCC was now reduced to 242/5, still 65 runs behind.
Walton then found an able partner in Kavem Hodge, as the pair took the total to 285. However, Jaipaul could not stay out the action, dismissing Hodge for 15 leg before. Leg spinner Imran Khan then joined the party, taking three of the last four wickets to dismiss CCC for 330, a small lead of 23 runs. Jaipaul ended with figures of 22-4-56-4, while Khan finished with 29.4-3-97-3.
T&T has now played four matches, winning three and losing one. T&T will remain at home for round six, when it welcomes Jamaica for a day match, which bowls off on Friday at the Queen's Park Oval.
