American Guy Eldon East got the better of T&T duo Marc Codrington and Gevan Samuel on Saturday at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on day two of the Njisane three-day Cycling Festival to capture the feature international men's 30-lap event, on a night that also saw T&T youngsters showcase their talent.
East proved too strong for the T&T pair, while Barbadian Darren Matthews had to settle for fourth position.
The two-lap international sprint event got the attention of the crowd, as it featured national cyclist Njisane Phillip and Frenchman Gregory Bauge. Bauge, who is a multiple world champion in track cycling, was popular among the spectators.
Despite the top cyclists, two upcoming T&T cyclists grabbed some attention. Each quarterfinal heat featured two riders, with the winner advancing to the next round. In heat two of the men's quarterfinal, it was a T&T showdown between Keron Bramble and Njisane. As the first lap was ending, Bramble kicked it into second gear and never looked back to beat Njisane.
In the second semifinal Bramble faced Tomas Babek of Czech Republic for a spot in the final. Unfortunately, the Czech was too strong for Bramble. Bramble, who represents the Rigtech Sonics cycling club, finished fourth after losing the third place playoff to Australian Patrick Constable. Babek was crowned the champion, defeating Bauge in the final.
Junior female rider Joy Abigail John of Arima Wheelers also finished a surprising fourth in the women's international two-lap sprint. In the quarterfinal, John got past her Arima Wheelers team-mate Denese Francis to progress to the final four.
In the semifinal, Laurie Berton of France outlasted 16-year-old John. John told the T&T Guardian she was pleased with her effort on the night and was looking forward to the International Grand Prix this weekend, also being held in Trinidad. Jennifer Davis eventually won the final.
Varun Maharajh was also successful for T&T, winning the international men's elimination event. Jamaican Marloe Rodman came second, while Argentine Sebastian Donadio won bronze.
Phillip defeated the field in the ten-lap international men's event, finishing ahead of Rodman and T&T duo Joshua and Adam Alexander. The three-day cycling festival concluded last night at Skinner Park.
