BRIDGETOWN–Barbados, trailing Jamaica by 57 runs on first innings, reached 18 for one in their second innings at the close on the second day of the Headley/Weekes Trophy semi-final at Kensington Oval here yesterday.
Resuming on 52 for one, Jamaica lost wickets regularly and were 140 for six before a seventh wicket partnership of 114 between skipper Tamar Lambert and Dave Bernard took them to first innings honours.
The under-rated Lambert was the last man out for a battling 121, which is almost certain to put his team into the regional final. Bernard made 42.
Earlier Sulieman Benn threatened to demolish the Jamaicans, grabbing the key wickets of overnight batsman John Campbell (31) along with David Jacobs (21) and Jermaine Blackwood (37), while Ashley Nurse dismissed Andrew McCarthy (0), to leave Jamaica perilously placed on 125-5.
And when 15 runs later, Carlton Baugh was run out for 10, it seemed a matter of time for the Jamaicans.
However Lambert and Bernard put their heads down and took their team past the Barbadian score of 245.
Bernard eventually fell to fast bowler Fidel Edwards, who also removed Jerome Taylor (0), while Benn returned to dismiss Nikita Miller and Lambert.
Benn ended with 5-102, while both Edwards and Nurse captured two wickets. CMC
