Manchester United T&T legend Dwight Yorke thinks there was a disconnect between David Moyes and the players after it was confirmed the Scot had been sacked on Tuesday morning.
The news ended speculation that Moyes would be axed after a nightmare campaign since taking over from Alex Ferguson - with United enduring their worst campaign for years.
The club have suffered their most Premier League defeats - eleven - while they will not be in a European competition for the first time since 1981 if they fail to even make the Europa League as is now looking remote following their defeat to Everton at the weekend.
The 2-0 defeat to Moyes' old club has left the team marooned in seventh place in the Premier League - confirming their absence from the Champions League next season.
Louis van Gaal is the clear favourite to take the post now while Ryan Giggs has been confirmed to take the reigns until the end of the season.
And Yorke believes results and performances were simply not good enough - highlighting problems between the players and Moyes.
"There was a disconnect between the players and Moyes," he said.
"Something had to give and when results not good enough it's the manager who has to go but the players must take responsibility too."
United confirmed the news on their Twitter feed on Tuesday. "Manchester United announces that David Moyes has left the club," it read.
"The club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role."
