The world's best BMX riders will compete for the largest purse in BMX flatland history and an equally impressive BMX ramp prize, in the Monster Energy BMX Freestyle Exams by Trevlon Hall, at the Jean Pierre Complex tomorrow and Sunday
The event promises to be truly entertaining, as riders will be pulling out their best tricks for a piece of the US$86,000 in prize money.
So far, nearly 100 riders have signed up, with 23 competing countries and, according to owner of international BMX lifestyle magazine, ART, Alain Massabova, the event is going to be one of the best in the world.
Massabova, who will sit on the judge's panel, explained the contest will open the Caribbean to BMX and he expects only bigger and better things from host Trevlon Hall in the future. "This is going to be one of the biggest competitions in the world. It will be intense because of the large purse, but I think it will be fun and cool because it is in the Caribbean," he said.
"T&T is now a big BMX country. The event last year was huge with the schools tour, followed by the main event at the Jean Pierre Complex. This year will see major progress thanks to Trevlon's hard work and I am eagerly looking forward to it."
Echoing Massabova's sentiments was Luis Elias, organiser of one of the largest BMX competitions in the world, FISE, in his homeland, Costa Rica. Elias explained that while FISE has been long established and recognized in the BMX world, the work he does to organize that competition, is nothing compared to what he has seen Hall do thus far.
"Trevlon (Hall) has certainly stepped up his game with this contest as far as the prize money is concerned. This means that all the other major contests in the world of BMX will have to do something about it and get a big purse as well, if they want to keep up with the times."
As for the riders, which include multiple past X-Games winners, the contest is currently the most highly anticipated for the year and many have expressed their excitement about coming to compete in T&T. It won't be all about sun, sea and sand though, as the large purse will have them pulling out their best tricks to win the inaugural event.
"The level of riding will be top notch and with the prize money being so large, the riders will going for their most difficult moves," explained US Flatlander, Terry Adams.
