The 1989 Strike Squad and the national blind and visually-impaired cricket team were all part of the day’s activities on April 13 as the End of Hunger Committee and Friends hosted its inaugural United Nations (UN) International Day of Sport for Development and Peace in Rio Claro.

Last year, the UN General Assembly proclaimed April 6, 2014 as the first International Day of Sport and Physical Activity, to celebrate the contribution of sports and physical activity to education, human development, healthy lifestyles and a peaceful world.

To help fulfil this initiative, the Hunger committee decided to host a sports day at the Shell Recreation Ground, Rio Claro.

One of the highlights was a cricket match between the National Blind and Visually–impaired cricket team and a local combined team of youth from the Rio Claro Cricket Coaching School and the Rio Claro Police Youth Club.

The visiting blind team came out victorious.

Moko jumbies and gorilla-costumed youth entertained the spectators with their myriad of colours and dance routine.

The 1989 Strike Squad and an All Stars team from Rio Claro faced off in a football match, with the former coming out on top.

The day’s proceedings were played in good spirits as the Strike Squad was treated to fish broth by the Rio Claro All Stars.

At the event were representatives from the UN Information Centre, as well as Member of Parliament for Nariva/Mayaro, Winston ‘Gypsy’ Peters.

The UN International Day of Sports in Rio Claro attracted participation across the national community, crossing all ethnic, social and geographic barriers in a spirit of peace and oneness.
