Four runners including race winner Jonathan Farinha secured qualifying standards for the IAAF World Junior Championship after running below the 10.55 mark in the boys' Under-20 100m final at the NCG-sponsored NAAA National Junior Track and Field Championship, yesterday.Spectators at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, were brought to their feet after Abilene Wildcats' Farinha sped to gold in 10.25 seconds, even after dipping under the qualification standard (10.55) in the semifinals.Taking second and third were John Mark Constantine (10.35) of Concorde and Alpha Athletics' Micah Ballantyne (10.43), respectively. Another Abilene Wildcats runner, Holland Cabara also qualified with a 10.51 run in the semi-finals.
In an almost similar situation, three athletes clocked beneath the World Championship standard in the girls' equivalent.Zakiya Denoon took gold in 11.41 seconds, well below the 11.70 World Junior standard.Aaliyah Telesford (11.52) and Kayelle Clarke (11.59) took second and third, while Point Fortin's Mauricia Prieto unfortunately missed the mark with her 11.78 fourth place finish.One athlete, Theon Lewis of Petrotrin Point-a-Pierre dipped under the World Junior standard (47.56), when he took gold in the boys' Under-20 400m dash in 47.09 seconds.Ohdel James, who placed second in 47.56 made the CAC Junior standard (47.60).Action will continue and conclude today.The 4x100m and 4x400m relays, as well as the 200m and 800m runs are all carded for today, as are the remaining field events.
