T&T youngsters, Tevin Joseph and Tarandath Deonath left here yesterday for Myslowice, Poland where they will compete in the Second FIVB Under-23 World Beach Volleyball Championships at the Summer Sports Resort from today until Sunday.
Coached by David Thomas, the T&T pair warmed up for the event by competing in three stops of the 2014 Norceca Beach Volleyball Circuit in Cayman Islands and Guatemala.
However it was tough going for Joseph and Deonath as they failed to win any of their pool matches, but were still happy for the chance to gain some experience and will head to Europe where they will compete with 31 other pairs in the main draw while 18 are in the qualifying draw.
This will be the second such outing for Deonath after he partnered Brandon Legall at the Under-21 Championships in Croatia last year.
Joseph and Deonath will be T&T's lone team at the event while St Lucia, the other Caribbean country at the competition will be represented by Cohen Caesar and Augustin Faulkner in the men and Kerin Neptune and Tyna Williams among the women.
The format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments–whether pro or age group FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam or FIVB Beach Volleyball Open–are the same, featuring pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds.
The inaugural tournament also took place in the southern Polish town last year, where Germany's Victoria Bieneck and Isabel Schneider won women's gold and local favourites Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak completed their set of age-group gold medals in the men's.
