To date, 36 coaches, a mixture of current and former players together with coaches who are young and experienced, have recieved certificates of participation in the first phase of certification of the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT) Level 1 coaching course.
The programme now moves to its fourth zone the South East at the Mayaro Resource Centre for the Mayaro Course and basketball court from tomorrow to Monday.
The course starts at 9.30 am to 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday and from 5 pm to 9 pm on Monday.
The Three-day course is free to all basketball coaches.
The course is the follow-up of a mandate from FIBA, (Federation of International Basketball Federations), the world governing body for the sport, that all participants–coaches and all match officials (referees and table officials)–must be trained, examined and tested to participate in a FIBA approved event.
The NBFTT, has partnered with the SPORTT (the Sport Company of T&T) to conduct a Level 1 course for basketball coaches.
The NBFTT through its technical and training and organisation and development committees are calling on all coaches through all managers and zonal chairpersons in their respective zones.
Also, aspiring coaches and Sportt camp coaches are asked to make every effort to attend.
The coaches who participated in the East Zone course were Anthony Rodriguez, Alphonso Raphael, Alejandro Acosta, Christopher Lampkin, Terrence Mayers, Daniel Voisin, Matthew Sheppard, Zwayne Les Pierre, Joel Theodore, Jeffrey Bourne, Khadine Phillips, Kadeem Greig, Ishmael Defreitas, Terell Davis, Ahkeem Boyd, Owen Sylvester, Dexter Morien, Barbara Bourne Kirt Pierre and Eric Sheppard
The coaches from Tobago that participated were Ronnie Ryan, Atiba DeLeon, Stephen Forde,Christopher Clarke, Jerol Orr, Alex Melville, Philmore Cornwall, Kerry Celestine, Marcus Phillip, Wendell Prince, Hakeem Grant, Kwesi Thomas, Aneica Frank, Derrick Hamilton, Oba Arrindell and Vincent Taylor
The course programme is being offered on weeknights and weekends during the months of June and July 2014.
The purpose of these courses is to give every coach and aspiring coaches an opportunity to be qualified and certified in order to coach the basketball locally and in the SPORTT Programme.
To date, coaches in the North-East, East and Tobago zone regions of the NBFTT have been exposed to the programme.
A Level 1 certificate is also needed to coach basketball at the entry level and at schools in Trinidad and Tobago.
The programme is made possible through a Scholarship funded by the SPORTT Company.
Courses are being offered in every zone (East, North, South, South East, Southwest, Central and Tobago).
The Course will continue in the North Zone (Tranquility Secondary School for the Port Of Spain Course) June 24-27; Southwest & South Central Zones(Point Fortin Indoor & Fyzabad Anglican Secondary for South Central ) June 28 to 30; and South Zone (Pleasantville Indoor) July 4 to 6, 2014.
