Opening batsmen Jeremy Solozano and Keagan Simmons showed some form yesterday for their respective teams in a national Under-19/Under-17 45-over warm up match at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, ahead of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional tournaments.
The national U-17 team is preparing for the WICB Tobago House of Assembly 50-over tournament in Tobago from July 6-16, while the U-19 team is training for the WICB U-19 tournament in Guyana scheduled to play from July 20–August 10 in Guyana.
Yesterday, the U-19s posted a healthy 250/2 behind an unbeaten 104 from left-handed Solozano. Before retiring, Solozano faced 109 balls, hitting 12 fours and two sixes. His opening partner Amir Jangoo was also in good touch, slamming 71. Emilo Gopaul (1/33) and Nathaniel McDavid (1/39) took one wicket each.
In reply, the U-17s got a positive start from Simmons and Jordan Warner. The pair took the score to 71 before Warner fell for 31. Simmons top scored with 63 off 94 balls (five fours) but could not take his team to the total, as umpires called of the match with the U-17s on 207/7 after 41 overs, handing the U-19 team a 43-run win. Sachin Seecharan (35 off 35 balls) and Bryan Boodram (28 off 13 balls) both looked aggressive during their stay at the crease. Samuel Roopnarine was the chief destroyer, grabbing 4/32.
