West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin says that his team needs to be bigger men and take responsibility for their performances.Ramdin said his team failed to capitalise after they had the advantage after the first two days and that cost them the third and final Test against New Zealand. The result gave New Zealand a 2-1 series win.West Indies bowled out the visitors on the opening day and were on top after the rain-shortened second day, but the Black Caps hit back to win the match by 53 runs at Kensington Oval, on Monday."We need to carry on to big hundreds when we get a start. Many of us in the top order got starts but failed to carry on and this was a major problem in the series.
"Our mindset is our problem really. We need to be bigger men, work hard, take responsibility and when we get to 50 and 60 we must not be satisfied with that. We need to come out and fight and get to 150 and 160, big hundreds. When you do this you change the overall outlook of your total. When this happens who more or less get a lead on first innings which can set up the match for you."Ramdin said he hopes the young guys take encouragement from their performances and build on it. "Although we lost the series, where are a lot of positives that we can take from the series. Guys like Jason Holder, Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood came in and did well and they must use this as a stepping stone to better things."
Ramdin also cautioned the senior men that they take note of their performances. "After this hopefully the senior guys can pull their weight and use this series as a wake-up call. The senior guys need to start producing and they must take responsibility for their performances."The West Indies next Test assignment is against Bangladesh in September in the Caribbean and Ramdin is hoping to see a much better performance. "We have Bangladesh next up and although they are not as good as New Zealand, they still present a challenge and we must use that series to start the re-building process. The young guys will be keen to continue their good work and this series is important as we look to put things right in West Indies cricket."
Ramdin has been included in the West Indies T20 team for the two-match series against New Zealand in Dominica on the weekend.
