Courtesy of an all-rounded team effort, T&T's senior women's basketballers continued their flying start to the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championship for Women with a second win in as many days, with a crushing 96-33 triumph over Guyana, yesterday.
The event is currently taking place in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
The result comes less than a day after T&T defeated St Vincent 57-43 and a day before T&T was scheduled to meet Jamaica in the group decider. The top team in T&T's group is yet to be decided, but with its second win, T&T has confirmed its place in the semifinal.
Four T&T players recorded double-figure scores, with point-guard Rhea Codio leading the pack on 15 points. Codio connected with five of her seven free-throw attempts, and was followed closely behind by captain and guard Rhonda John-Davis and small forward Joelisa Cooper, who scored 13 points each. Guyana captain Natasha Alder was the only player to score in double-digits for the losing team with 14 points.
In total, T&T made 99 field goal attempts, but only connected with 34, while enjoying 21 points from 30 free-throw attempts. Alicia Liverpool, who scored nine points contributed with as many rebounds.
T&T was practically untroubled from start to finish. Guyana had its best performance in the first period, which it trailed 17-10. T&T then increased its advantage slightly to lead 35-19 at the half. Guyana then lost control of the fixture from the onset of the third quarter. The scores then read 61-24 at the start of the final period of which T&T dominated (35-9) to eventually take the win by a whopping 63 points.
Meanwhile, Jamaica, which thrashed Guyana 86-26 the night before was in action against St Vincent in its second match after press time last evening. A win for Jamaica would see it joint-top with T&T with only points-difference separating the two teams.
Today, the group (B) will be decided when T&T takes on Jamaica at 6.45 pm today. The winner will meet the second-placed team in Group A, currently the Virgin Islands, while the runner-up from Group B will meet the top team from Group A. The winning semifinalists will automatically qualify for the Centrobasket Championships, which takes place from the 22-26 of this month in Monterrey, Mexico.
