Jeremiah Simon and Ty Warwick were adjudged the Most Valuable Player awards when the Spartans Basketball Academy held its 2014 closing ceremony on June 29 at the Maple Leaf International School, Petit Valley.

Simon and Warwick topped the awards list having displayed discipline and skills at the highest levels from among 30 participants who started the programme back in March.
The academy was founded by Garvin Warwick, the president of the National Basketball Federation of T&T and Graham Leitch for the purpose of cultivating the athletic potential of young boys and girls who aspire to continue in the sport on a collegiate and professional locally and overseas.
The goal of Spartans is to emphasise individual skill development as well as the necessary team concepts so that future players are given an opportunity to excel in any programme whether it is at school, recreation level, or competitive basketball.
he programme caters for participants five (5) to 12 years.
"The participants have all been taught the basic fundamentals of basketball skills and more importantly they have been able to understand sharing and playing with each other. The Fair Play concepts are also part of the teaching experiences that form the teaching programme" said Leitch, a director of the programme.
Spartans has partnered with the Diego Martin Regional Corporation to effect the scholarship programme which will teach not only basketball, but values. He said: "Values are considered important in life, its what makes life worth living.
"A value is also something that helps people decide what is right or wrong in moral terms. Learning takes place in the whole body, not just in the mind and with basketball, physical literacy and learning through movement contributes to the development of both moral and intellectual learning.
"This process would not take months but rather years to change the culture within individuals and communities." explained Leitch. Also supporting the programme for the last 12 months are main sponsors–Flavorite Ice Cream, Gatorade (VEMCO), Republic Bank Ltd, 3RS Web & IT Solutions, Stefan Murray Designs, Nestle, Smalta and BMX /Flatlaner personality Trevlon Hall.
