GEORGETOWN–Chris Gayle's Jamaica Tallawahs maintained their nerves to squeeze out a four-run win over Denesh Ramdin's Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League at the National Stadium here yesterday.
An unbeaten 68 from Lendl Simmons guided the Warriors to 144 in their 20 overs, which was not enough to overhaul the Tallawahs 148.
Chadwick Walton (53) and Adam Voges (48) steadied the Tallawahs innings in a partnership of 55 for the third wicket after the loss of Gayle (11) and Owais Shah (0).
The pair came together in the eighth over and were separated in the 16th when Walton was deceived by a slower ball from Sunil Narine. He struck six fours and one six in his 42-ball inning.
Voges and Andre Russell (15) put on another 40 for the fourth wicket before the former was dismissed with three balls left. His 48 was made off 43 balls and contained two fours and a six.
Narine's four overs cost just 14 runs for the wicket of Walton but there were two wickets each for Ronsford Beaton and (2-27) and Jimmy Neesham (2-21).
Simmons batted throughout the 20 overs and shared in a major partnership of 78 with Ramdin (32) before the latter was struck in the face with seven balls remaining and had to retire. At that stage the Warriors needed 17 from seven balls. Chris Barnwell hit the first ball he faced for six, leaving 11 to get from the final over.
However, Simmons and Barnwell could only get 5 runs from the over, as Russell produced exactly what his captain wanted to maintain his team's unbeaten run in the tournament.
