Sandrina Hunsel was once again a dominant force to lead Suriname to a straight sets (25-12, 25-22, 25-15) victory over record ten-time winners' Barbados in the Women's Division of the 15th Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Championship at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo, yesterday.
Hunsel, who is in the running to cop the "Best Spiker" and "Best Scorer" awards ended with a match-high 23 points, laced with 21 kills, a block and one ace while Sigourney Kame and Morena Leter added 11 and ten points respectively in the 80 minutes contest.
Shari Matthews was the lone player in double-digit scoring with 16 for the Barbadians and captain Thonya Joseph added seven.
Suriname outscored their opponents, 44-25 on spikes and 7-2 on aces, but was bettered on blocks by Barbados, 7-5.
Suriname was also aided by 19 errors from Barbados, while committing only 15.
On Saturday, USA-based duo, Gillian Asque and Lecia Brown scored in double-figures as Jamaica cemented its spot in the final of the five-team tournament with a convincing 25-19, 25-12, 25-21 defeat of Barbados in their final round-robin match.
Asque ended with 11 points, punctuated by eight kills while Brown had seven kills in her ten points tally for the Jamaica who advanced to its first championship match since losing to Barbados for gold in 2004 and their second overall after also losing to T&T in the 1996 decider.
Simone Asque, the team captain and Gillian's sister added nine points for the winners' dubbed the "Riddim Girlz" while the duo of Tiffany Clarke and Sasha-Lee Wallen got five apiece.
On the other side of the net, the experienced Shari Matthews was the lone player for record six-time winners Barbados to score in double-figures with 11 points, boosted by ten kills.
It was a total all-round effort from the Jamaicans who dominated on spikes 31-20 and service aces, 6-1 while both team were even on blocks with seven each.
However, Barbados did not help itself in a must win match as it committed 31 errors to Jamaica's 24.
With the victory, Jamaica came up against T&T in last night's.
Going into the decider, the unbeaten T&T 'Calypso Spikers" witha 4-0 record was after a fifth straight title and record equaling sixth after winning the last four editions of the tournament, in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012.
