National cyclist Kwesi Browne clocked a personal best at the Elite Pan American Cycling Championships, advancing to the second round of the men's sprint in Aguascalientes, Mexico, yesterday.
In the qualifying round Browne broke the tape in 10.054 seconds to qualify 15th overall, recording a personal best. Other T&T cyclists Quincy Alexander (10.184) and Njisane Phillip (9.766) also advanced to the first round. Alexander advanced with the 21st fastest time, while Phillip qualified as the sixth fastest. The top 24 cyclists advanced to the first round of the sprints.
In the first round Browne defeated Colombian Anderson Parra to progress to round two. Unfortunately, Phillip was disqualified for impeding American Daniel Robertson, while Alexander could not get the better of Brazilian Flavio Cipriano.
Browne's run ended in the second round as Colombian Santiago Ramirez proved too strong for the Arima Wheelers rider.National endurance rider Varun Maharajh continued his participation in the omnium event, clocking a personal best in the 1km time trial with a time of 1:04.443.On Friday night, Maharajh came third in the elimination event (omnium III). Maharajh is currently tied for ninth place overall in the omnium.Also on Friday night T&T rider Justin Roberts clocked a personal best of 1:01.425 to secure sixth place overall in the men's 1km time trial, while Alexander clocked a time of 1:01.450 to finish seventh. The competition concludes today.
