Barbadian Jamol Eastmond continued his top form on the local cycling curcuit, edging Dutch national champion Yondi Schmidt to win the 30-lap main event at the Beacon Cycling on the Avenue 3 event on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, Port-of-Spain, on Tuesday night.
Attention was on Schmidt on the night, after the Dutchman won stage three and four at the Tobago International Cycling Classic which concluded on Saturday.
In the main event, many laps were fiercely contested as cash prizes were up for grabs for a number of laps. Between the 14th and 17th lap there was always two or three riders leading the trailing bunch.
With two laps to go after all the lap prizes were won, most of the riders were bunched together as they started focusing on the $10,000 prize for the overall winner. Eastmond, representing local cycling club Heatwave, showed his sprinting prowess at the end to edge Schmidt and claim the top prize.
Finishing behind the top two were Norlandy Lavera (Dominican Republic) and T&T duo Adam Alexander and Emile Abraham. Abraham was also competitive at the Tobago Classic, finishing fourth overall.
Earlier in the one-lap sprint invitational and international race, Schmidt won gold ahead of Alexander and Abraham. T&T club Team Drive Phase Sport (DPS) commanded the 200-metre sprint invitational and international event snatching gold and silver. Jude Codrington finished first followed by his club-mate Quincy Alexander, while the consistent Schmidt won bronze.
Many of the T&T junior cyclists who represented the country at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Suriname last weekend, wasted little time on their return. Tyler Cole and Nicholas Paul won gold and silver respectively in the juvenile four-lap race, while Teniel Campbell came second in the ladies four-lap event.
After the racing came to a close, soca singer Blaxx entertained the spectators with different genres of music which included reggae. He was joined on stage by former soca star Peter C Lewis and Abraham.
