National cyclist Kwesi Browne was in top form over the weekend, grabbing silver in the men's keirin at the Los Angeles Grand Prix, USA, and will hope to continue this form at the first leg of the UCI Cycling World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, which pedals off on Saturday and Sunday.
Browne will meet his teammates Quincy Alexander and Jude Codrington in Houston, USA, today, before the trio travels to Mexico for the World Cup. The T&T cyclists will compete in the keirin, sprint and team sprint events. The cyclists will be joined by Des Dickie (coach), Joel Browne (manager) and Kevin Tinto (mechanic).
Codrington and Alexander have been training together in Trinidad and manager Browne stated that the team is in good shape and ready to go.
National cyclist Njisane Phillip has asked to be excused from the first leg, but is expected to participate at the second leg of the Cup from December 5-7 in London, England.
In an interview last week with the T&T Guardian, the manager said the World Cup would be used as preparation for the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) later this month. "It is a young sprint team, the main aim (of the trip) is to give them experience."
The CAC Games will take place in Veracruz, Mexico, from November 14-30. Endurance riders Emile Abraham and Varun Maharajh will join the six-member T&T contingent for the CAC Games.
The third and final leg of the World Cup will be staged in Cali, Colombia on January 17 and 18 next year.
