The national trio of Jude Codrington, Kwesi Browne and Quincy Alexander will line up in the men's keirin event at the first leg of the UCI World Cup Cycling Series in Guadalajara, Mexico, today.
Last night the trio was carded to compete in the qualifying round of the men's team sprint in an effort to participate in today's main draw of the event. In tomorrow's final day of competition the T&T cyclists will battle in the individual men's sprint event.
National cyclist Njisane Phillip, who won this country's first UCI World Cup medal last year, has asked to be excused from the first leg. In the first leg of the 2013/2014 Series in England, Phillip won silver in the individual sprint. Phillip is expected to compete at leg two of the 2014/2015 World Cup in London, England from December 5-7. The third and final leg of the World Cup will pedal off in Cali, Colombia on January 17 and 18.
The UCI World Cup Series is an important step towards T&T's qualification process for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The trio is also using the first leg of the Cup as a warm up for the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mexico, from Friday until November 30. Endurance riders Emile Abraham and Varun Maharajh will join Codrington, Browne and Alexander at the CAC Games.
