It was indeed a swim meet to remember as ten national open records were broken at the recently concluded National Open Short Course Championships at the St Michael's Swimming Complex, San Fernando, including an 18-year old record for the 200-metre butterfly.
Over 200 swimmers from ten clubs throughout T&T participated in the annual four-day swim meet hosted by the Amateur Swimming Association of T&T from November 6-9.
Kael Yorke, 13, of Tidal Wave Aquatics, got thunderous applause from the crowd when he broke an 18-year record with his time of two minutes, 11 minutes and 13 seconds (2:11.13) in the 200m butterfly. He also won the championship trophy for first place in the 11 and over boys category with 52 points.
Zarek Wilson, eight, blew his competition apart to emerge with four new national open records in the 50m butterfly (33.95), 50m freestyle (30.56), 50m backstroke (36.01) and 100m freestyle (1.06.71). The former Eagles swimmer and now Atlantis Aquatics swimmer was a joy to watch as he kept the crowd entertained with his successive wins to capture the championship trophy for first place in the 10 and Under boys with 81 points.
The blink/bmobile foundation was a proud sponsor of the swim meet for yet another year. Graeme Suite, Head Public Relations and External Affairs Ag at blink/bmobile, congratulated the new national record holders and all the other participants on their amazing performances this year and shared that the blink/bmobile foundation was privileged to continue to support the annual swim meet.
