Ricardo Maikoo of Unique Sports and Cultural Club was named Cricketer of the Year at the North East Zonal Cricket Council Awards held on Saturday at the Guaico Secondary School, Sangre Grande.
Since the resurgence of the legendary club three years ago, Maikoo has been a candidate for the award at the end of each season. This time, he got to take the trophy home.
Adding to his delight was the fact that his group captured Club of the Year Award.
Unique Sports and Cultural Club was also declared the top Reserve Team and was unbeatable in the Sunday League, Senior Division (reserve team) and Senior Division tournaments. In the T20 championships the cub finished second.
Maikoo also secured the award for batsman and bowler of the season, before being called to receive the Best All Rounder in the senior division having scored 416 runs and taken 31 wickets.
He repeated this performance in the division one. There, he scored 129 runs and took 21 wickets.
Spinner Ronald D'Andrade was given a special award for registering the best bowling figure of the season: 2.5-2-0-4.
In the senior division (reserve team) Unique 's Sanjiv Cody Singh scored the most runs172 (5 innings average 43) and took the most wickets 15 (27.4-4-43-15), while his brother Rajiv Alex Singh took the most wickets during the T20 Competition 15 (28-0-151-15).
Cheryl-Ann Maikoo-D'Andrade, treasurer of Unique Sports and Cultural Club said that the resurgence of the club was gratifying when one reflects on how it was four years ago.
"It's a great feeling knowing where we started three years ago. Even though it's an old club, almost 55 years in existence, Ronney Lochan, the president and I picked it up from where it was and re-energised it. He reached out to me three years ago, to bring back the club which was at its lowest point.
"The first year we started, we won out the first division and we moved up to the senior division. We won almost most everything except Club of the Year. Last year, we placed second in standings. Cunaripo was first and they moved up to Championship Division," she said."
