Last month in his most recent bout, he secured a win by technical knockout with two minutes, 12 seconds on the clock. It was a victory attained with relative ease against Guyanese fighter, Romeo Norville. His form is telling, and his hometown Siparia is behind 27-year-old Sheldon Lawrence to rekindle the fire within the community, with continued success in the sport of boxing.
Originally from Happy Valley, Erin, Sheldon Lawrence was born November, 1987. He attended Siparia Junior Secondary and then went on to finish his schooling at Siparia Senior Secondary.
Thereafter, he married Venessa Millet and has a two-year-old son with her.
Regarded as one with a humble demeanour, Lawrence ascended from a Christian home and makes his living at Nathan Petroleum Services as a roustabout (care taker of tools).
Even as a child, Lawrence showed interest in boxing and sought to emulate Floyd Mayweather. At the age of 14, he entered boxing in the middleweight division with Felix "Wamba" Voisin Jones as his trainer, while doing glove work with the late Jizelle Salandy, Alexi Alexander, Andrew Fermin, Richard Straker and Devon Jones. They were all stable mates from Sand City Boxing Emporium where he still trains.
Lawrence engaged in his first amateur fight against Hank Hamilton at the Petrotrin Grounds, Marabella. His has stamped 35 amateur fights thus far. He is a two-time national champion and a Caribbean Games medalist.
However, due to the lack of opportunities and the frustrations at the amateur level, Lawrence decided to turn to pro-boxing.
He made his debut at the professional level last December and has since engaged in three professional bouts, winning all three by knockout. Lawrence says he continues to work on his lateral movements and punching power.
"I learn from fight to fight and have not seen my next opponent neither have I seen any tapes of him. I am training so as to counteract any style or technique that is presented to me, be it south paw or orthodox. I respect all opponents that are put before me. I don't intend to hurt anyone but when I am in the ring it is strictly business," Lawrence said proudly.
Lawrence said he leads a clean, decent and God-fearing life. "I do not indulge in alcohol or any form of drugs and I take care of my family; I go to church every Sunday 10 am to 12 noon and go to the gym on Sunday evenings. I live a very structured life," he added.
With Hospedales and Voisin as his trainers, Sheldon runs six miles five days a week. He does weight training three days a week and technical training six days a week in order to increase capacity and build endurance.
"I presently have a good team working with me and I intend to stick with my team going forward. I will be working under Unified Promoter's Boxing Association of T&T. My goal in boxing is to be a WBC and or a WBA World champion, and between one to 18 fights I would like to fight for a World Title. My key assets in boxing are to entertain my fans and create better opportunities for my family."
