Well deserving secondary school rugby players were all smiles at the recent awards ceremony for the 2015 Rugby season. Students from several schools gathered at the Bishops Anstey High School in Port-of-Spain for the presentation held by the T&T School Rugby Football Union (TTSRFU).
President of the TTSRFU Justice Gregory Rousseau, commented on the success of the School Rugby programme sponsored by telecommunications company Digicel. Boasting a total of 15 participating schools nationwide, Rousseau noted the plans to further develop the programme which is expected to double in size at the start of the new league in September of this year.
Also addressing the players and stakeholders gathered was former International Rugby player and Olympic coach and present coach of the Caribs RFC (Rugby Football Club), Mark Mc Dermont. He provided some much welcomed words of wisdom to the aspiring rugby players on seizing the opportunities provided by the sport both on and off the field.
Bishops Anstey High School took home the trophy as the overall girl's league winners, while St Joseph's Convent, Port-of-Spain was the girl's knockout winners. The Digicel Under-17 league champions went to the players from the International School in Port-of-Spain. The 'Kendal Mootoo' Challenge trophy, named in honour of the deceased Rugby centre, was also presented at the awards ceremony.
Digicel's Senior Sponsorship Officer, Christopher Edmond expressed how delighted Digicel is to continue its contribution to the sport of Rugby in T&T. He added, "We are happy to partner with the TTSRFU as we continue to invest in our nation's youth. Our aim is help to produce well-rounded citizens for the country by instilling healthy attitudes and developing healthy minds and bodies among these athletes. We look forward to the start of the next season which promises more momentous with the projected growth in the league."
