ST JOHN'S–Shaun Marsh struck an unbeaten century as Australia, replying to West Indies President's XI's first innings of 382, reached 205 for six at the close on the second day of the three-day tour match at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground here yesterday.Resuming at 288 for five, the young West Indies rallied to 382 with Jason Mohammed (55) and Carlos Brathwaite (50 not out), joining Shane Dowrich, Rajindra Chandrika and Roston Chase among the batsmen scoring half centuries.
The West Indies looked well short of their eventual score until a last wicket partnership of 60 between Brathwaite and fast bowling companion Miguel Cummins yielded 60.Chase and Mohammed resumed on 65 and 42 respectively, but any thoughts Chase had of becoming the first centurion in the match were short circuited when he was bowled by Peter Siddle, after the pair had added 117 for the sixth wicket. He batted for 208 minutes faced 138 balls and struck 11 fours.
Siddle struck again nine runs later when he had Mohammed caught by Adam Voges at slip. He struck six fours and a six in his 152 minutes at the crease.Thereafter, the West Indies lost two wickets in quick succession with Joel Warrican and Miguel Mindley both dismissed by Mitchell Marsh for ducks. However the last wicket pair of Brathwaite who blasted five sixes in his unbeaten half century thrilled the small crowd on hand.
Siddle, Marsh, Lyons, Hazelwood and Fawad Ahmed all took two wickets. The Australian lost Chris Rogers (2) and skipper Michael Clarke with just 25 runs on the board but Marsh and Voges batted confidently in adding 116 for the third wicket before Voges (52) was trapped lbw by left arm spinner Warrican. He batted for 125 minutes faced 109 balls and struck seven fours in his knock.
Australia then lost three quick wickets, firstly Mitchell Marsh (8) got a faint edge to a Brathwaite outswinger and Warrican then removed both Brad Haddin (1) and Peter Nevil (0) to leave the Aussies with some work to do on today's final day.At the close Marsh had reached 118 after facing 216 balls and spending the entire 271 minutes of the innings at the crease. He struck 10 fours.
Warrican ended with 3-69 while Brathwaite 2-29 and Cummins 1-42 were also among the wicket takers.
