Out-of-favour national defender Anastacia Prescott netted the decisive item as 94.1FM Boom Champions Fuego edged Chancellor Angels 2-1 to maintain its 100 per cent winning record in the augural Women's Premier League and go top of the table when the action shifted to the Diego Martin Recreation (Northern) Ground, Diego Martin on Wednesday.
Watched by an appreciative crowd of more than 2,000 spectators, who were mostly standing, the Maylee Attin-Johnson-led Angels and Fuego, with Tasha St Louis at the helm, took to the field, level on three points and with a chance to overtake CNGC Rush and Petrotrin Oilers, which sit atop the table with four points each from two matches.
Angels who trounced Wave FC 3-0 back on the opening night of competition at the St James Police Barracks Training Ground led by a brace from Attin-Johnson were first to strike with speedy Jodi Ann Mc Gregor finding the back of the net.
But Fuego, who outgunned Shanghai Construction Dragons 5-3 in the league's curtain raiser then drew level through a glancing header from Paraguayan Ermelindo Izquierda off a corner in the 26th and then five minutes later Prescott, ho had a solid all-round 90 minutes got the winner.
Both teams had a few more chances to add to their tally, but in the end their lack of killer-instinct and perhaps some rustiness from an almost two-week layoff cost them dearly.
To add to the Angels' woes, St Kitts/Nevis international goalkeeper Tynetta Mc Koy had to be stretchered off with a head injury after colliding with team-mate and defender Jodie Redgrave.
Mc Koy was taken to the St James Medical Complex, and then transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where she was kept overnight for observation after showing signs of a slight concussion before being released yesterday. With the win, Fuego with Richard Hood, former national Under-17 women's coach and current coach of Digicel T&T Pro League club, at the helm improved to maximum six points from two matches, two ahead of Rush and Oilers while Angels stayed fourth.
Today, the action shifts to East Trinidad, Sangre Grande to be exact for a double-header at the Ojoe Road Recreation Ground. In the opener, with the Shangahi Construction Group Dragons coming up against Oilers from 6pm followed by CNGC Rush and Wave FC, two hours later.
The WPL is the brainchild of Senator the Honourable Brent Sancho, Minister of Sport who said, "I am extremely pleased with the warm reception given to the League and the players. It augurs well for women's football in Trinidad and Tobago and we intend to take the WPL to even greater heights in the future. For now though, I'm happy that football fans are coming out to watch the games and enjoying them. That's exactly what we were going for and we got it!"
